• Talc powder has been associated with the increase of ovarian cancer if used too often for the genital area.

• Sodium Hydroxide is very toxic and can irritate the skin, in high dosage it can even cause burns and scaring.
• Rancid oils used in skin care products oxidize relatively quickly and they can cause skin damage and premature skin aging.
• Propylene or Butylene Glycol can cause weak cellular structure, irritations and dermatitis.
• Lanolin can be harmful if the sheep's wool from which the lanolin is extracted was contaminated with any type of chemicals.
• Fragrance is a word that can describe a few thousands of ingredients which can be toxic. It can produce rashes, irritations and skin discoloration.
• Isothiazolinone can cause burns and contact dermatitis for some people who are susceptible to dermatitis. So look at the labels before you purchase any cosmetic products, to protect your skin from any type of skin problems that might be due to your skin care products.

Botanical Oils

Canola Oil

Centella Asiatica

Harmful Chemicals in Personal Care Products

In the absence of proper organic standards and further, lack of 100% organic body care products, it is necessary to know a few chemicals that should never feature in the ingredients list of the organic cosmetics you use. These chemicals are strong in nature and when used regularly for years, they have the ability to affect any type of skin. These chemicals also show immediate reaction on sensitive skins.

Healthline provides a list of eight such chemicals you should never use . These are commonly found in skin care and hair care products.

• Propylene Glycol: Propylene glycol is obtained from petrochemicals and is added in numerous skin care creams and lotions as an emulsifying agent. It makes the skin look smooth; however, it speeds up aging of the skin. It also causes irritation and contact dermatitis.
• Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS): SLS acts as a surfactant, degreaser, and emulsifier and is used in numerous foaming personal care products such as soaps, shampoos, body wash products, face cleansers, shaving cream, etc. This detergent affects the eyes and delays their healing time. It can be absorbed by the skin surface and gets accumulated in your body organs. When used in products containing nitrogen-based raw materials, it forms carcinogenic nitrates, which are known to cause irritation to the eye and skin.
• Fragrance: Artificial fragrance can cause numerous health problems including headaches, lung problems, skin irritation and dizziness.
• Mineral Oil: Mineral oils are obtained from petroleum products and can cause skin irritations. They block skin pores, which restricts movement of nutrients and waste matter from the cells.
• Parabens (Propyl, Methyl, Butyl, or Ethyl): Parabens are used as preservatives in numerous skin care and hair care products. They are highly toxic and cause allergic and skin reactions.
• Imidazolidinyl and Diazolidinyl Urea: These are also used as preservative and are known for causing contact dermatitis.
• Synthetic Colors: Synthetic colors should be avoided as they are allergic to the skin.
• Triethanolamine (TEA): TEA is used to adjust the pH of the cosmetics. It causes various allergic reactions including eye problems, and dryness of hair and skin.

Does baby shampoo need to contain cancer-causing chemicals? No – but it often does. Product tests released by the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics in March 2009 found two known carcinogens, 1,4-dioxane and formaldehyde, in dozens of bath products for babies and kids, including Sesame Street character brands and even the iconic "pure and gentle" Johnson & Johnson's baby shampoo. This report followed up on test results released in February 2007, which found the chemical 1,4-dioxane in 18 popular baby soaps, bubble baths and shampoos. None of the products tested in either round listed 1,4-dioxane or formaldehyde on the label. Both formaldehyde and 1,4-dioxane are known animal carcinogens and probable human carcinogens, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Formaldehyde can also cause skin rashes in sensitive children. As with many chemicals of concern used in cosmetics, the companies that make these products argue that it's "just a little bit" of 1,4-dioxane in the baby shampoo. Unfortunately, the same baby may be exposed to 1,4-dioxane from the bubble bath, the shampoo, the body wash and many other sources in the same day. Why do products contain these nasty chemicals? 1,4-dioxane is a byproduct of a petrochemical process called ethyoxylation, which involves using ethylene oxide (a known breast carcinogen) to process other chemicals in order to make them less harsh. For example, sodium laurel sulfate – notoriously harsh on the skin – is often converted to the gentler chemical sodium laureth sulfate by processing it with ethylene oxide (the "eth" denotes ethoxylation), which can result in 1,4-dioxane contamination. Sodium laureth sulfate is just one common example. More than 56 cosmetic ingredients are associated with the contaminant 1,4-dioxane. Formaldehyde contaminates personal care products when common preservatives release formaldehyde over time in the container. Common ingredients likely to contaminate products with formaldehyde include quaternium-15, DMDM hydantoin, imidazolidinyl urea and diazolidinyl urea. The good news is that many companies in the natural products industry are quitting the ethoxylation habit. New standards such as the Whole Foods Premium Body Care Seal do not allow ethoxylation, and many companies have been quietly reformulating to replace chemicals such as sodium laureth sulfate that are associated with 1,4-dioxane. Status Update In May 2009, we delivered a letter to Johnson & Johnson asking for safe products, which was signed by 40 groups representing more than a million nurses, moms, physicians and environmental advocates. Testing by author David Steinman released in March 2009 found lower levels of 1,4-dioxane than previously found in an array of products – proof that it's possible to make products without this contaminant. An August 2008 lawsuit filed by the California Attorney General's office against several companies for making products with toxic levels of 1,4-dioxane. What You Can Do Avoid using products that list ingredients that may be contaminated with 1,4-dioxane, including sodium myreth sulfate, PEG compounds and chemicals that include the clauses "xynol," "ceteareth" and "oleth." Similarly, avoid products that contain formaldehye-releasing preservatives, including quaternium-15, DMDM hydantoin, imidazolidinyl urea and diazolidinyl urea. To search for products without these marker chemicals, use the advanced search in EWG's Skin Deep database and check the "Contamination concerns" box. Nanotechnology

Beware personal care products that tout use of nanoparticles, nanomaterials or nanotechnology. This emerging technology is almost entirely untested for its health effects, and no requirements exist for either testing or labeling these products to make sure consumers are both safe and informed. That means that you might be getting a dose of nano without even knowing it.

Nanotechnology involves the manipulation of materials and the creation of structures and systems that exist at the scale of atoms and molecules. This is seriously tiny stuff: a human hair is about 80,000 nanometers in diameter.

Because of their size, the properties of nanoscale materials (measuring <100 nm) differ significantly from larger scales of the same materials, introducing new and potentially heightened risks of toxicity that remain poorly understood. For example, nano-sized titanium dioxide, often used in sunscreens, may have completely different UV-blocking properties and health effects than conventional titanium dioxide particles (also used in sunscreens).

Research by Campaign for Safe Cosmetics founding partner Friends of the Earth suggests that nanoparticles have entered just about every personal care product on the market, including deodorant, soap, toothpaste, shampoo, hair conditioner, sunscreen, anti-wrinkle cream, moisturizer, foundation, face powder, lipstick, blush, eye shadow, nail polish, perfume and after-shave lotion.

Preliminary scientific research has shown that many types of nanoparticles can be toxic to human tissue and cell cultures, resulting in increased oxidative stress, inflammatory cytokine production, DNA mutation and even cell death. They can penetrate cell walls, including organ tissues, and are known to be highly reactive.

One emerging finding is particularly ominous: researchers using animal models have found that, when inhaled, carbon nanotubes may cause the same type of cancer linked to asbestos: mesothelioma. That's cause for grave concern among workers who manufacture products containing carbon nanotubes, and cause for unknown concern for consumers and the environment.


Status Update

No government in the world regulates nanoparticles, but the European Union has at least begun to take action to better understand the risks posed by nanomaterials in cosmetics and personal care products: The EU's Scientific Committee on Consumer Products advised in March 2008 that a review of the safety of nanotechnology is necessary, and current approaches to assess the potential risks of nanomaterials in cosmetics, including sunscreens, are inadequate.


What You Can Do

Avoid personal care products that advertise use of nanotechnology or nano ingredients. Because no labeling laws exist for nanotechnology in any type of consumer product anywhere in the world, nanotech may be difficult to avoid completely. One thing you can do: contact the customer service department of cosmetics companies whose products you use, and ask if they use nanotech. If so, let them know that you won't be buying their products until they remove the nanoparticles.

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS), Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES), Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate (ALS) and CDE

There are detergent and surfactant found in many personal care products (soaps, shampoos, bath gels, toothpastes and etc). It is inexpensive and very effective foaming agent, you will even find it in car washes, dish detergents and laundry detergent. They are known irritant that cause hair loss, skin and scalp irritation, and eye irritation. It is well documented that it denatures skin proteins, which cause not only irritation, but also allows environmental contaminants easier access to the lower, sensitive layers of the skin. Some studies also suggested they may be carcinogenic, a cancerous agent.

Preservatives

Paraben
Widely used in the cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries. They can be found in shampoos, commercial moisturizers, shaving gels, toothpaste, underarm deodorants and etc. Paraben can cause skin allergy and some scientists believe that it may be correlated with breast cancer, based on a study by UK scientists in which preservative chemicals were found in sample of breast tumors. Their analysis of 20 breast tumors found high concentrations of Parabens in 18 samples. The Parabens found in the tumors indicates it came from something applied to the skin, such as an underarm deodorant, cream or body spray. EDTA
In personal care products, it is added to cosmetics to improve their stability toward air and it also act as a stabilizer to prevent decolouration. EDTA is in such widespread use that it has emerged as a persistent organic pollutant. Study found that both dermal exposure to EDTA in most cosmetic formulations and inhalation exposure to EDTA in aerosolized cosmetic formulations would produce systemic effects.
